Maxim Sees Washington

From the beginning, a flute theme...at the National Gallery of Art, a celebration of Judith Leyster's 400th birthday features a poster image of her Young Flute Player (1635).  Inside the museum a transverse flute, such as the one in the painting, and other historical instruments are on display next to Dutch Baroque masterpieces.  Maxim wants you to notice that we are on day two of a 26-day itinerary.

Standing in the middle of Pennsylvania Avenue with the U. S. Capitol in the background, the traffic is rather calm at midday.  Sometimes one encounters skateboarders in the center lane, headed for the Capitol at top speed--until the Hill an effortless, freeform journey.
